Service · non-running

It does not have to start. It does have to roll, steer and brake.

Both of our car haulers carry a winch, so a vehicle that will not start is routine work. What is not routine is a vehicle that will not roll, or will not steer, or has no brakes — that needs different equipment, and it is the single most common reason a pickup fails at the gate.

Illustrative photography — not Prime Trans equipment.

Can a car be transported if it does not run?

Yes. A winch-equipped car hauler can load a non-running vehicle as long as it rolls, steers and brakes. If any of those three is missing, the vehicle needs a rollback or a forklift instead, and it costs more. Tell the carrier which of the three apply before booking.

The three questions

Answer these and the quote will be right.

  1. 01

    Does it roll?

Are all four wheels on and will they turn freely? Locked brakes, a seized transmission in park, missing wheels or a flat-bedded frame all mean no.

  2. 02

    Does it steer?

Can the front wheels be turned to line the car up on the ramp? A wrecked front end often cannot.

  3. 03

    Does it brake?

Once it is on the deck it has to hold still. No brakes means it has to be chocked and chained differently, and some equipment cannot take it at all.

Three yeses and it goes on the winch at a modest surcharge over a running vehicle. One no and you need a rollback, a forklift or a skate set at the origin, which we will arrange rather than send a truck that cannot do the job.

What we move

Non-running is a category, not a problem.

  • Auction and salvage unitsCopart, IAA and insurance total-loss vehicles out of the Upstate, Charlotte and Midlands yards.
  • Trade-ins that diedThe unit a customer drove in on that will not go back out. Common, and no drama.
  • RepossessionsRecovery to the storage lot or straight to the auction block.
  • Project and restoration carsLong-parked vehicles with flat tyres and stuck brakes — tell us now, not at the gate.
  • Seized and forfeited vehiclesGovernment seizure work, which has its own chain-of-custody paperwork; see Government & fleet
Terms

What it costs and why.

EquipmentOpen stinger or three-car wedge, both winch-equipped, 6 trucks in the fleet
SurchargeA non-running unit that rolls, steers and brakes carries a modest inoperable fee over the running rate — it takes longer to load and it occupies a specific position on the deck
What we cannot takeVehicles that will not roll, vehicles with no front-end steering, and vehicles that have been in a fire and are structurally unsound. We will say so on the phone
Condition reportPhotographed at pickup and delivery on the electronic bill of lading, which matters more on a damaged vehicle than an undamaged one
InsuranceAuto liability $1,000,000 · Cargo $1,000,000

Honest scope: we are a car hauler, not a tow company. If the vehicle needs to be dragged out of a ditch, pulled from a building or extracted before it can be loaded, that is a recovery job and you want a wrecker service first. We will load it once it is somewhere a truck can reach.

Questions shippers ask

Straight answers

How much extra does it cost to ship a non-running car?

Expect an inoperable surcharge over the running rate on a vehicle that rolls, steers and brakes. If it does not do all three it needs a rollback or a forklift at the origin, and that is priced separately because it is genuinely a different job.

Do you need the keys?

Yes, ideally. Without keys the steering may be locked, which stops the vehicle from being lined up on the ramp. If there are no keys, say so at booking — there are ways around it, but they need to be planned.

Can you pick up from Copart or IAA?

Yes. Give us the lot number, the yard location and the release, and we handle the gate. Bear in mind that salvage yards have their own release rules and load-out hours, and a truck that arrives after cut-off leaves empty.

What if the car is missing wheels?

Then it will not roll, and it needs a forklift or a rollback rather than a winch. Tell us before the truck is dispatched. A wasted dispatch costs you a day and it costs us a driver's morning.

A unit on the lot costs you every day it sits there.

Tell us the origin, destination, units per week and first pickup date. A written quote comes back the same business day.
